Negrita

Akita · Unknown

Beautiful Negrita is a friendly, playful two and a half year old Akita who is ready to find her forever home due to a change in her family’s circumstances. Negrita is a gentle, loving girl who quickly won everyone over during her assessment, including a young child, with whom she was playful, calm and affectionate. She genuinely enjoys human company and is happiest when involved in whatever is going on around her. She takes treats gently and is highly food motivated, which will be a great asset in her ongoing training. During her assessment she showed herself to be intelligent and eager to learn, quickly picking up new behaviours when rewarded appropriately. It is clear that Negrita has not had the benefit of much formal training in her life so far, and her new family should be prepared to invest time, patience and consistency into helping her develop good manners and life skills. The encouraging news is that she is a bright dog who responds well to positive reinforcement and shows excellent potential to learn. On walks, Negrita enjoys exploring her surroundings and can be strong on the lead, particularly when she is excited or wants to investigate something interesting. She would benefit from continued lead training to help her walk more calmly and focus on her handler. Once she had settled into the walk, she showed improvement and was able to engage with treats and training exercises. She is a sociable dog who enjoys the company of both people and other dogs. When she spots dog’s, she would like to meet, she can be enthusiastic and determined to approach them for play. Likewise, she can be overly friendly with strangers and may occasionally jump up to greet them if not guided otherwise. While her intentions are entirely friendly, due to her size and strength her new family will need to continue working on polite greetings and impulse control so that she can interact appropriately with everyone she meets. Like many young dogs, Negrita has shown some behaviours that suggest she can become bored if not given sufficient physical exercise, mental stimulation and boundaries. Her new family should be committed to providing enrichment, training and appropriate outlets for her energy. With structure and consistency, there is every reason to believe she will thrive. She is confident and unaffected by traffic or general noise, with the vacuum cleaner being her only known dislike. The sight of it is enough to send her retreating to a safe corner. During her assessment she did not bark excessively or show any aggression. When she spotted wildlife, she watched with interest but remained manageable and responsive to her handler. As with any dog, behaviour may vary in different environments and situations. Negrita is a healthy, well groomed girl with a lovely clean coat. She enjoys being handled and even tolerates bath time and showers well. Out and about, she is an engaging companion who enjoys meeting people and experiencing the world around her. Her friendly disposition has made her popular with neighbours and she has enjoyed positive interactions with children. She could live with dog savvy children aged 6+ who understand how to behave around large dogs. Due to her size, strength and breed characteristics, we are looking for a home with large breed experience, or owners who are committed to continuing her training and providing clear, consistent guidance. She could potentially live with a patient, friendly, neutered male dog of a similar size, subject to careful introductions. She has not been assessed with cats and we cannot guarantee how she would behave around resident felines; therefore, we are seeking a cat-free home. Negrita is a wonderful dog with a truly sweet nature. She may not have had the training or boundaries that many dogs receive early in life, but what she does have is affection, intelligence and enormous potential. With dedication, consistency and ongoing positive training, we believe she will blossom into an exceptional companion for the right family. Could this be you? If so, please complete an adoption form today.

About Negrita

What life with Negrita looks like

Negrita is a large adult akita dog waiting at Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Negrita, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Negrita?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Negrita on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Negrita if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Negrita already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Negrita isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK early rather than rehoming privately; they know Negrita and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
