Nero

Male · Adult · 4 years

Update 07.03.26 In the meantime, Nero spent some time with the police and was tested there as a possible service dog. Both in work and at home, he showed his best side. With his dog handler, he lived without problems in daily life in the household and got along very well with the handler's son, who is of elementary school age. In training, Nero impressed with his great enthusiasm for work, his motivation, and his willingness to cooperate with people - in experienced hands, an absolute dream dog. Unfortunately, during a veterinary health examination, it turned out that Nero suffers from hip dysplasia (HD) and arthritis. Because of this, he could not be taken into police service. Currently, however, Nero shows no symptoms and remains active, eager to perform, and full of energy. Still, his future people should be aware that limitations could occur with age due to these findings. At the beginning of March, Nero also received a hormone chip and is currently chemically neutered. Nero is unfortunately a classic case of impulsive dog acquisition. Purchased through advertisements for children and given up a few days later at the animal shelter - the perfect start of a "Wanderpokal" story. The reason given for the surrender was that he bit the children, but fortunately, it turned out to be just an excuse to get rid of him. Nero is friendly towards people, but very undisciplined and wild. At 40kg, he bounces up and down like a rubber ball, jumps on people, pulls on the leash, and barks at dogs. This sounds exhausting at first, but one must not forget the good sides: The beautiful Nero is extremely eager to work, has real fun in interacting with people, and quickly becomes a real overachiever with confident leadership. He is by no means a "problem dog," but simply a normal, very agile and very undisciplined German Shepherd. He would be a dream for Rassel lovers! Little impulse control, as this was never developed, but the willingness to go through thick and thin with his human. We are looking for a family without small children for Nero due to his size and temperament. His people must definitely have experience with dogs, preferably with shepherds or similar working breeds. He should get a home with clear structure, it would be great if he were actively involved in sports, but he also needs to learn what rest means. If you find a good balance here, Nero will certainly become the ideal training partner.

About Nero

What life with Nero looks like

Nero is a large adult dog waiting at Tierheim Northeim.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nero, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nero?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Northeim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nero on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nero if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Northeim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nero already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nero isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Northeim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nero and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
