Nico

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Nico is a Podenco mix male, born in January 2025. At 43 centimeters tall and weighing about nine kilograms, he is a slender companion. He is microchipped, vaccinated, and neutered. All tests for Mediterranean diseases came back negative, and he is otherwise healthy. He is well-suited to moving into a new home and adjusting to his new surroundings. In daily interactions, Nico is very friendly, open, and curious. Once he has gained trust, he enjoys being close to his humans and enjoys petting. At the same time, he is an active, energetic young dog who needs exercise and activity. He enjoys long walks and already walks well on a leash. Nico is observant, learns readily, and appears intelligent. With a calm, clear, and loving companion, he will surely learn a lot and develop into a reliable companion. Nico is currently living with a foster family and is gaining valuable experience in everyday life. He lives with children and cats in his temporary home. He also likes other dogs, so a friendly, existing companion could work well for him. What is crucial for Nico is not the composition of the household, but a calm atmosphere in which he is given time and his boundaries are respected. Reliable routines and patient handling help him feel safe and show his open, affectionate side more and more often. Nico's journey into the care of the animal shelter began in a field, where an older couple discovered him. The animal-loving seniors fed the fearful male, but for weeks they were unable to catch him. Only with the support of Arca Sevilla could Nico be secured. However, it quickly became clear at the animal shelter that the unfamiliar environment and the many stimuli overwhelmed him. He was too intimidated to settle down there, and so he had to move to a foster home. There, the lovable little gentleman is gradually warming up. With each day, he gains more trust, accepts affection, and begins to enjoy life at the side of humans. His development is very beautiful to observe, but some experiences still have an impact. If someone moves quickly towards him, Nico still reacts uncertainly. Loud, sudden noises can also frighten him. In such situations, he needs people who remain calm, convey protection, and do not pressure him. Pressure or impatience would set him back, while understanding and gentle encouragement help him gain new security. For Nico, we wish for an understanding, rather quiet home with people who enjoy growing a trusting relationship. His future family should like to go for walks, offer him appropriate activity, and at the same time recognize when he needs rest and distance. A safe daily routine, friendly consistency, and enough time to settle are particularly important for him. Anyone willing to accompany Nico at his own pace will get a curious, eager to learn, and affectionate young dog who has already made great progress. Nico does not need a turbulent environment, but people with empathy, patience, and a good sense of a sensitive dog. Then the trust he gains daily can grow further.

About Nico

What life with Nico looks like

Nico is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nico?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nico if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nico isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
