Adopt NIGEL

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

The NIGEL was born on a farm that was put up for sale and abandoned by its owner. There, he stayed with his 4 siblings, his mother, and 4 other dogs. They were left hungry, even his mother who couldn't feed her litter. Neighbors alerted the authorities and made a complaint, after which someone came to rescue the dogs. The babies had very little human contact at the beginning of their lives, so they were very timid around people when they arrived. They were also very hungry. Since then, one of the dogs has had the luck of finding a home and we know he adapted splendidly, but the other three are still with us. The NIGEL is probably a bit more social than his 2 other siblings, but he is still quite timid. He is very gentle and is accustomed to the company of other dogs. But with people, it's a different story. He lets the person who feeds him and cleans the dog shelter touch him, which proves that he gets used to and trusts the people he sees daily, but he is wary of strangers. The NIGEL needs a special family, someone with a lot of understanding and patience. We believe he would thrive in a house with a garden located in a quiet place, perhaps in a village. The NIGEL was born around April 2017. He is vaccinated, dewormed, and neutered.

About NIGEL

What life with NIGEL looks like

NIGEL is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Requires patient family due to shyness and lack of early human socialization

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting NIGEL, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about NIGEL?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw NIGEL on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt NIGEL if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is NIGEL already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if NIGEL isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know NIGEL and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
