Nika

Female · Young · 3 years

Together with her large family, Nika was already freed from poor husbandry by the veterinary office in February 2024. Unfortunately, they have hardly learned anything in their lives and had to start anew here after overcoming their partly enormous fear. Now they all walk on a leash, enjoy the run, and are happy to be petted, learning more things all the time. Cynically, Nika is initially skeptical towards strangers and needs a long time to build trust. However, she does not belong to the super-terrified dogs and now goes into new situations quite curiously when someone familiar is present. She is very friendly and cuddly towards her foster parents. She had to undergo an operation due to an entropium in her eye and showed herself to be very exemplary and cooperative at the vet, although this also cost a lot of training time. Despite much training, city life would not be so beautiful for her and most herding dogs, so she is looking for a rural home or directly on the outskirts. Dog-experienced people, better yet herding dog-experienced individuals, would be an important prerequisite, because somehow Herdis do tick a little differently. Of course, an escape-proof property should also be available, and although she would very much like to guard, she still wants family connection and to go for walks. Otherwise, she and her family are rather more laid-back companions, she likes to go swimming and now also travels quite calmly in the car. Spontaneous visits are not her thing, so please send an email with a few details about dog care.

DE·Show original

About Nika

What life with Nika looks like

Nika is a medium-sized young adult dog waiting at Tierheimverein Erfurt in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheimverein Erfurt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheimverein Erfurt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheimverein Erfurt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
