adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Now request this dog! Niko was found just a short distance from the shelter. All signs point to him being abandoned, as no one has reported him missing. Now he is safe and waiting to finally experience the beautiful aspects of life. The handsome male dog is about 40 cm tall and weighs around 16 kg. With his friendly gaze and calm demeanor, he quickly wins the hearts of people. At first, he shows a bit of reserve and prefers to observe from a distance, but it doesn't take long for him to build trust and approach cautiously to collect some cuddles. It could be that a small German Shepherd is sleeping in Niko and brings along some hound genes. Characteristically, Niko is a very gentle, loving, and more reserved dog. He doesn't push for attention but waits patiently until someone approaches him. Once he has built trust, he becomes clingy and enjoys the closeness to his people. Outdoors, he is curious and cheerful, exploring his surroundings and taking in new impressions without appearing overly anxious. With other dogs, he gets along well, but cats have not yet been tested. Niko has already learned to handle the leash and harness and gets along well with them. In the new home, consistent building on this should be done. The new family should be aware that he still needs to properly understand life in a home. Many everyday things are likely still unfamiliar to him, and he will need time to adapt to new routines, sounds, and situations. With patience, empathy, and loving consistency, he will learn step by step. For Niko, we wish for a quiet and loving home with people who appreciate his sensitive nature and give him the time to settle in at his own pace. Positive dog training classes can help give him security and strengthen the bond. Niko is a special dog, captivating with his gentle and reserved nature. He is ready to give his heart and become a faithful companion. Niko travels neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for fleas to his new home. Who will finally give dear Niko his own home? Many thanks to Daniela J. for naming Niko! As of: 25.04.

Vermittlungsvoraussetzungen Vermittlungsablauf Jetzt dieses Tier anfragen! Vermittlungsvoraussetzungen Vermittlungsablauf Jetzt diesen Hund anfragen!

About Niko

What life with Niko looks like

Niko is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Niko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Niko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Niko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Niko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Niko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Niko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Niko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
