Nina

Female · Senior · 16 years

“ My name is Nina and I'm a beautiful African Grey, around 16 years old.” Nina is a stunning, fully feathered African Grey with a sweet and gentle nature. She is a confident, fully flighted girl who enjoys exploring her surroundings when she's not perched by the window watching the world go by and whistling at the neighbours. Nina is happy to step up, enjoys sitting on your shoulder, and has a tendency to land on your head if given the opportunity! She loves human interaction and has a wonderful personality. Nina has an excellent vocabulary and enjoys having conversations with her people. She will happily repeat words and whistles back and forth, blows kisses, yawns loudly, and even makes fart noises! History/Background Nina has previously lived with other African Greys and generally copes well around them. However, she can be wary at times, as she was bullied by another female Grey in a previous home. Behaviour Nina is generally a very loving and affectionate girl who enjoys head scratches and spending time with her people. Like many female parrots, Nina can become hormonal at certain times of the year. Because of this, handling should be kept appropriate and limited when she is showing hormonal behaviours, as excessive attention can make matters worse. This year Nina laid eggs for the first time. Fortunately, she showed little interest in them and they were removed. Diet Nina enjoys a healthy and varied diet consisting of: Fresh chop each morning Harrisons High Potency Coarse pellets A small amount of Johnston & Jeff Lean & Fit seed mix Calcium supplementation when laying eggs She also enjoys fruit as an occasional treat, particularly blueberries, although these should be limited during hormonal periods. Her favourite treats are walnuts and cashews. Enrichment Nina's favourite pastime is shredding paper and cardboard. In fact, she much prefers this to most conventional toys. To help manage hormonal behaviour, she is provided with flattened cardboard rather than enclosed boxes, as open boxes can encourage nesting behaviours. She also enjoys bathing in her water bowl and spending time observing the world from a window perch. Nina does come with a cage, although she would benefit from an upgrade to a larger one in her new home. Summary Nina is a beautiful, intelligent, and affectionate African Grey with a fantastic personality and a great sense of humour. She is looking for a loving home that understands the needs of female parrots and can provide her with plenty of interaction and enrichment. About Nina

What life with Nina looks like

Nina is a small senior animal waiting at Problem Parrots in United Kingdom.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Nina far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nina, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nina?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Problem Parrots handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nina on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nina if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Problem Parrots will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nina already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nina isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Problem Parrots early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nina and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
