Okky

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Our animal welfare workers report: feeling the breath of life once more, being loved again, instead of dying alone and forgotten in the overcrowded animal shelter. It will likely be Okky's last phase of life, his last great journey, but it should be his most beautiful: Okky's journey into eternal happiness, where he can grow old happily and worry-free. Okky has turned gray around the snout, age leaves its visible marks, but Okky's senses are not yet dulled. He still sees and hears well, and his ever-sniffing nose still works just as it always has! Okky scores with life experience, agelessness, and is a calming presence. Now, the soft-furred, but easy-to-groom Okky sleeps a lot and more often. The bite of time also nags at this pretty senior male dog. But Okky still has plans, at the top of Okky's wish list is his own dog bed and a faithful soul by his side. Okky had a home in Spain where he lived with several fellow animals, but he sought something quieter. In the new, ideally quiet home, the scruffy Okky with the floppy ears would like to continue participating in life, snuggling, dozing, sleeping, celebrating coziness, enjoying human attention, and not having to do exhausting walks; they should be a bit slower, shorter rounds. But Okky knows that he who does not work, rots, and sniffing grass and bushes is one of Okky's declared favorite activities; he wanders through the run and likes to waste time there. A leisurely daily routine in a non-turbulent household would suit the senior well. The content Okky has already packed and is waiting for a liberating ticket to his own home and a worry-free life, because several good years should still come to the sturdy four-legged friend. Who sponsors Okky the ticket for the 'Glückstransport' and picks him up? In January 2025, our human-oriented Okky tested positive for leishmaniasis. Arthritis, likely age-related, was also diagnosed. Both conditions can be well managed and treated for Okky. Okky was treated for the leishmaniasis infection and now receives the medication Allopurinol. The leishmaniasis titer should be rechecked mid-year for safety. Okky shows no leishmaniasis-related symptoms but still requires Allopurinol tablets and special food. In February, Cushing's syndrome was also diagnosed in Okky, which is now being treated medicinally. He currently receives the medication Vetoril (Trolistane) at his foster home. The local veterinarian is optimistic and believes that Okky will not die from Cushing's syndrome but will live with it.04.12.2024 new photos Please note:

About Okky

What life with Okky looks like

Okky is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierischgeholfen e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Okky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Okky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierischgeholfen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Okky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Okky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierischgeholfen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Okky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Okky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierischgeholfen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Okky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
