Orion

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

We don't know the exact date of his birth, but our veterinarian estimates that he is at least 6 years old. He arrived at our shelter on March 29, 2025, and his condition clearly reflected a history marked by abandonment and neglect. When he was rescued, he was in a critical state: he weighed only 8 kilograms, was emaciated, with completely unkempt, dirty fur, and covered in fleas and ticks. Beyond the physical, what was most impactful was his gaze, deeply sad, as if pleading not to be forgotten again. After his admission to the veterinary clinic, he was diagnosed with Leishmania, anemia, hepatic inflammation, and a significant sacral deterioration that causes him a slight limp on cold days or in the mornings. Thanks to months of treatment and constant care, his evolution has been very positive: the Leishmania has decreased in level, the anemia has disappeared, and the liver no longer presents inflammation. The problem in the sacrum is not reversible, but with his medication, he handles it very well, and there are many days when he does not limp at all. Currently, he weighs 15 kilograms, has healthy and shiny fur, is full of vitality, and his eyes reflect joy and hope. He continues his daily treatment accompanied by supplements, something that is now a total part of his routine. The hunger he experienced left a mark, and now he eats with true enthusiasm. He enjoys his food accompanied by a little pâté or high-quality chicken breast, and every meal is a small triumph for him. He loves to walk and walks perfectly with a harness and leash, and he greatly enjoys human contact. He is a very affectionate and close dog, gets along well with calm dogs, and coexists without problems with cats, although he does not feel comfortable with dominant dogs. That said, the abandonment he suffered makes him uncomfortable with solitude. He needs a home where there is human presence, tranquility, and company, and it would be ideal if he had a small garden where he could move and relax at his own pace. His story reminds us that many adult and sick dogs are invisible, but also that, with care and love, they can flourish again. If you decide to open your home and your heart to him, you will gain a faithful, affectionate… and very clingy companion.

About Orion

What life with Orion looks like

Orion is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Huellas Callejeras in Spain.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Orion, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Orion?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Huellas Callejeras handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Orion on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Orion if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Huellas Callejeras will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Orion already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Orion isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Huellas Callejeras early rather than rehoming privately; they know Orion and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
