adoption requirements adoption process Now adopt this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Ortega has found her home! Her story: Our wonderful Ortega was finally able to travel to Germany in mid-December after two long years in the shelter in Fantanele and move in with her foster home in Bardowick. Here, she settled in quickly and easily: She exudes calmness and adjusts well, never being pushy but always present. She finds a good balance in a familiar environment, can already stay alone for some time, and is completely relaxed. The roughly 3-year-old Ortega quickly builds a close and very intimate bond with her people, is very clingy and cuddly. She shows a reserved side towards strangers. In hectic and restless situations, she reacts uncertainly by instinctively retreating, but can also be reassured and orient herself confidently with her primary caregiver. She gets along well with sovereign and calm dogs, but she may retreat or distance herself. Our wonderful Ortega is a through-and-through gentle soul who wants to avoid any conflicts. She walks beautifully on a leash, interprets basic commands differently depending on her mood, and sometimes has a bit of a stubborn streak. Then you have to prove it! :D Especially positive: Ortega already reacts very well to being called back! She is an absolutely good-natured soulhound and you get the feeling she feels into your heart. She is not only happy to learn with treats but also with cheerful, strengthening cuddles. Optically, Ortega could possibly be a mix with a Great Dane, and her wonderful character could fit that. However, at her approximate 60 cm, she would be rather small for that. :D Ortega is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and flea-treated. She brings an EU pet passport with her and can be adopted if you are just as enthusiastic about Ortega as we are?

Vielen Dank Silvie S.! Du hast Ortega ihren Namen geschenkt! Vielen Dank Uwe W. und Dagmar L.! Ihr unterstützt Ortega mit einer monatlichen Patenschaft! Stand: 08.01.2025

About Ortega

What life with Ortega looks like

Ortega is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ortega, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ortega?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ortega on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ortega if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ortega already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ortega isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ortega and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
