Otis

Mixed Breed · Female

Otis came to us at the shelter as a legal seizure and was born around 2021. The sensitive dog is the best example of the proverb: hard shell, soft heart. It seems Otis never learned rules or boundaries in his previous life, and the dog only reluctantly accepted a "no." Otis initially questions people, combined with his status aggression, which can lead him to correct people when something does not suit him. Teeth are sometimes used depending on the situation. Otis is initially indifferent and skeptical towards strangers; the more he knows a person, the more he tests how far he can go. By the way, Otis can manipulate people very well with his brown round eyes! The dog must first earn the respect of a "human." Otis's future two-legged companions should be ready and able to answer his questions clearly, kindly, calmly, and consistently, and to go through one or another conflict with him. Otis needs consistency and security in a human-dog relationship so that he can give up control. Otis shows himself open towards his reference persons, can now be touched and medically cared for well, and also enjoys quiet cuddles with trusted people. In the house, the dog can rest independently if there is not too much commotion outside the window. Outdoors, Otis shows curiosity, but also becomes quickly tense, restless, and excited. In such moments, he needs the guidance of a person to avoid getting into situations and losing his head. Currently, work is being done on orientation towards humans, as well as on leash training, although Otis has already shown progress. When Otis came to the shelter, he could hardly tolerate frustration. In stressful, overwhelming, or frustrating situations, he sought an outlet to relieve inner pressure. He would dig vigorously a hole, or a bucket had to be blamed - but sometimes his tension unfortunately also turned against the person at the other end of the leash. Over time, these reactions became less frequent and significantly milder, although they cannot be completely excluded. Otis's humans should accompany him calmly and confidently through the situation, give him the necessary support, and be ready to go through it together with him. These attacks are not directed (addressed) against the respective person, but rather show that the dog never learned to tolerate frustration, to regulate himself, and to find another solution for stress relief in such situations. The dog also shows resource aggression. Therefore, work continues on Otis's tolerance for frustration. Other dogs or social contacts seem to have never really been known to the dog. Unfortunately, Otis shows misplaced prey drive towards small dogs. The compatibility with other dogs will be carefully tested and followed up at a suitable time. For our Otis, we are looking for experienced dog people who exactly know what they are doing and are trained in handling dogs like Otis. His new humans must be ready and able to invest work in the handsome dog, to get involved in conflicts, to catch the dog, to pick him up, and not be discouraged, even if the path becomes rocky. Otis wants to be seen, loved, and held - he also wants to be taken seriously and guided. The dog is a real buddy type, who binds closely to his humans and brings a lot of potential to become a real cool companion. Due to Otis's hunting ambitions, we do not want to place him in a household with cats or small animals. Otis will also not be placed in a household with children. Otis is microchipped, vaccinated, and neutered. | Impressum | Datenschutz

About Otis

What life with Otis looks like

Otis is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel in Brandenburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Otis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Otis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Otis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Otis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Otis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Otis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel early rather than rehoming privately; they know Otis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
