SAM

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Unfortunately, Sam is also one of our long-term residents at the SOS Animal shelter in Calvià. Sam, who is now nine years old, has been with us since the end of 2022—that’s over two and a half years. Of course there is a reason for that. Sam was not kept in a species-appropriate manner and was not treated very well in his previous life – and that naturally had an impact on his behavior. Sam has a very hard time with people he doesn’t know. He has a general distrust of them and signals this very strongly – and if strangers don’t respect that and give him the space he needs, he will bite. He clearly has behavioral issues, and that needs to be communicated very clearly. Sam has a few people here that he knows well and really trusts – so we can see that there is a possibility if you engage with his history and give him the time and opportunities. However, this person would definitely need to be experienced with dogs (preferably with this breed) and have a lot of time and patience to build trust – here at our shelter. We clearly couldn’t just let Sam go anywhere. There should definitely be no children around. We have already done muzzle training with Sam here on site – and he is now coping very well with it. We consider this absolutely necessary, especially in cases like this. Sam has no problem with other dogs—he even likes most of them very much and seeks contact with them. Another Border Collie (or other confident dog) would certainly be a great addition for him. Sam has become who he is now due to inappropriate care – because proper care is essential, especially for these breeds. He himself has done nothing wrong. Of course, we are still hoping to find that one person who will give him a chance in life and embrace him and his story. Our experience with him here shows that this is definitely possible if a few things are taken into account. Sam is fully vaccinated, neutered, and tested negative for leishmaniasis.

About SAM

What life with SAM looks like

SAM is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at SOS Animal Mallorca.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting SAM, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about SAM?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SOS Animal Mallorca handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw SAM on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt SAM if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SOS Animal Mallorca will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is SAM already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if SAM isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SOS Animal Mallorca early rather than rehoming privately; they know SAM and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
