Pacman

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Unknown · Adult · 7 years

Pacman was classified as a Staffordshire Terrier-Pitbull mixed breed by an inspector. Under the Hazardous Dogs Ordinance in Saxony, American Stafford, Pitbull, and Bullterriers, along with their mixes, are categorized together. Given that Pacman is very muscular, we suspect that it might be a mixed breed between American Stafford and American Bulldog, which wouldn’t have led to a classification. However, it’s pointless to philosophize about it. Alone through the classification, Pacman was subject to official regulations due to “suspected dangerousness.” This could have been contested with an expert opinion. Unfortunately, the owner did not address the official regulations, so the authority had to take the dog. Pacman thus came to the animal shelter for formal reasons, not because it had previously caused any notable incidents. Unfortunately, a serious accident occurred at the animal shelter: Pacman’s leash carabiner came loose, Pacman climbed over a high fence and the shelter’s gate, followed the scent of another dog it had previously observed, attacked the dog, and killed it. Due to this incident, Pacman was classified as dangerous and is now subject to regulations that cannot be lifted. Specifically, this means that Pacman must wear a muzzle – which it is used to – and that its future owners must prove their reliability and knowledge to the authority. We are happy to advise on this. Is Pacman a killer that can never be rehomed? No. Pacman is an energy bomb and cannot be adequately managed under shelter conditions – physically or mentally. He is extremely people-oriented and wants to be constantly around – even high fences cannot deter him – which is why he was also on a leash on the day of the incident when his animal caretaker was taking him for a walk… Pacman wants to be liked but of course also has the typical Staffordshire stubbornness and is full of energy. Therefore, his leash handling and basic obedience still need to be worked on. Under shelter conditions, there simply isn’t as much time as in private care, and if it gets out, Pacman will naturally be very excited and have no sense of learning. Anyone interested in Pacman has a task ahead of them, which is undeniable. He is a powerhouse, and the biting incident and his danger to other (small) dogs cannot be denied. However, for those who really want to give a truly impoverished animal shelter dog a second chance and take on responsibility, Pacman is the right one. The behavior in a family placement can therefore differ from the descriptions.

About Pacman

What life with Pacman looks like

Pacman is a adult staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Zwickau in Zwickau.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pacman, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pacman?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Zwickau handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pacman on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pacman if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Zwickau will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pacman already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pacman isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Zwickau early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pacman and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
