Adopt PANDA

Pit Bull Terrier · Female · Adult · 4 years

A PANDA was found on a garbage dump in Loures, a place where unfortunately there are many abandoned dogs. She was trying to survive on what she found, was skin and bones, and had very red and sensitive skin. She also had a mass on one of her legs, something we operated on immediately, which fortunately turned out to be benign. Over several weeks she was treated, gained weight, her skin became healthier, and she completely transformed. Unfortunately, she tested positive for leishmaniasis, which means she will have to be medicated with Allopurinol for the rest of her life. It's not the end of the world -- many dogs live long, healthy lives being positive, and the medication is not expensive. PANDA is very sweet and gentle. She easily attaches herself to people and, when she likes someone, is completely devoted. Overall, she gets along well with other dogs and spends her days at the shelter running in large groups, although she has had some fights, nothing serious, but it happens. She can get jealous of human attention, wanting to be the center of the world. She is also protective of food. PANDA cannot be left alone. If left alone in a room, she can destroy everything: doors, drawer handles, wood, metal. After the hunger she experienced, she eats anything she finds. But if someone is with her, she is an angel, she can lie quietly for hours in a corner on a small blanket. But she is also complicated outside, because she is only where she wants to be. She can jump and climb any fence, so if she is in a fenced area but wants to be with the people on the other side, she will take five minutes to get where she wants. She walks well on a leash. She responds to her name. She comes when called. PANDA will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, spayed, and with a microchip.

About PANDA

What life with PANDA looks like

PANDA is a medium-sized adult pit bull terrier dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Positive for leishmaniasis, requires lifelong Allopurinol medication. Severe separation anxiety with destructive behavior when alone. Food guarding tendencies.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting PANDA, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about PANDA?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw PANDA on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt PANDA if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is PANDA already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if PANDA isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know PANDA and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
