Papaya

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Papaya is a beautifully marked Galga, whose nose was lovingly dipped into a bowl of flour by Mother Nature. The three-and-a-half-year-old female dog has been in the care of Puntanimals since April 2022, and was thus – like so many other running dogs – abandoned at the end of the hunting season and then fortunately saved by the completely overwhelmed animal protectors from a death in the Perrera. Papaya initially showed that she had had many bad experiences with two-legged beings and was not ready to give any trust. Our friends spent many hours and days just sitting by the shy girl in the cage, not looking at her, offering her cookies, and waiting for a moist nose to eventually cautiously push into her hand. And that day did come! Since then, Papaya has been steadily developing, and some of her friends among the volunteers can already sit with her in the sun, stroke Papaya's ears and her belly, and even walk with her very relaxed. The magic word for Papaya is patience. Anyone who dares to let the friendly mimosas build friendship on her own terms, who can rejoice in small progress, celebrate every loving nudge and every centimeter that a dog like Papaya moves closer, can certainly one day soon joyfully play with her best friend, run through fields, snuggle on the couch – but at the beginning of this special relationship, patience must be there, and the willingness to put one's own need for closeness aside. Papaya is an open-minded girl, but due to her previous experiences has forgotten how beautiful it is to conquer the world together. She will learn again, she is still young and has a really cheerful character. We hope that the special people who a dog like Papaya needs are reading this text right now – and do not hesitate to get in touch with us soon.

About Papaya

What life with Papaya looks like

Papaya is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Papaya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Papaya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Papaya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Papaya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Papaya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Papaya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Papaya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
