Papaya

Male

I am Papaya, a blind, loving budgerigar cockatoo looking for happiness. I can hardly see anything, but I do well in a familiar and not too large cage, arranging myself comfortably there. Of course, new surroundings initially make me a bit scared, and I feel much safer in a familiar environment. Therefore, I shouldn't be given too much space, as it might overwhelm me. My animal caregivers advise me on this matter and would be happy to discuss it with you. And of course, I still wish for suitable companionship in my home. Budgerigars are particularly lively and active companions. They enjoy the attention of their human friends and can become very trusting with a bit of patience. As flock birds are very social, they should be rehomed in pairs at least. If there are already one or more nice fellow animals in the new home, they can also move in alone. The animal shelter rehomes budgerigars both in suitable apartment living and in outdoor cage keeping with a sheltered area (in my case, we will see together what best suits me). For two budgerigars in suitable apartment living, the cage should be at least 1.60 meters long, approximately 50-60 centimeters deep, and about 0.8 meters high (the dimensions vary by cage manufacturer) and should have a UV light specifically designed for birds. Also, a daily flight of several hours with several natural perching spots should be ensured. In outdoor cage keeping, the size of the cage depends on the number of animals. Will I also have luck despite my handicap?

About Papaya

What life with Papaya looks like

Papaya is a large adult bird waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Papaya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Papaya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Papaya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Papaya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Papaya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Papaya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Papaya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
