And the black around my eyes: don't I look like a panda bear?I am Peanut. I am a boxer mix and you can tell from my behaviour: I am goofy and energetic. I like to test my limits so I need a family that is familiar with big, energetic dogs. I love to play with other dogs, but I need some restrictions from my owner, because I tend to play rather roughly. When I see a cat I keep my distance. Altough I have been at the shelter for a while now, I have not been available for adoption the whole time. I have Leishmania and because I didn't get treatment before I came to the shelter, I was in a bad condition for a while. Thanks to medication I got better and now I am in good health. I only need one pill per day to stay healthy, and like every dog with Leishmania I need to have my blood tested regularly to keep a close watch on my bloodlevels.I am waiting for a family to bring me home. A family that loves me to pieces, a home where I get to play and learn how to behave with other dogs. With the right home and proper activities I will be the best dog! Despite what my name suggests, my life was nothing like peanuts up until now. But I'd really like it if my name would fit my future!?Want to help PeanutSponsorBecome a sponsor an guarantee that their daily needs like food and parasite treatment is covered. About Peanut

What life with Peanut looks like

Peanut is a large puppy/kitten boxer dog waiting at Gouves Shelter in Heraklion.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

Note from the shelter: Leishmania - requires daily medication and regular blood testing

🇬🇷Adopting from Greece

Greek shelters often partner with Northern European rescue groups for placements. Animals are sterilized, vaccinated, and chipped before adoption. Fees vary widely depending on whether the shelter is municipal or NGO-run.

Frequently asked

Adopting Peanut, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Peanut?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Gouves Shelter handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Peanut on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Peanut if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Gouves Shelter will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Peanut already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Peanut isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Gouves Shelter early rather than rehoming privately; they know Peanut and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
