Peppi

Male · Adult · 5 years

- knows car rides - gets along with fellow animals conditionally - must still be trained - needs a barrier-free/flat-dwelling home Peppi is a loving, sophisticated, and very people-oriented male dog who forms a close bond especially with women. In his familiar environment (currently in the care of one of our colleagues), he is house-trained, approachable, and knows basic commands reliably. Peppi needs time to settle in but then finds his independent peace. We are looking for a quiet household without animal competition for the little guy - if there is already a dog, he should be well-mannered, well-socialized, and Peppi physically mature. Children should be at least 14 years old. Peppi is not generally compatible with fellow animals; he does not get along with cats. During dog encounters, Peppi enters a significantly heightened state of excitement and stress („tunnel vision“) and cannot respond to known signals at these moments – not out of disobedience, but because he is not capable of it. This is a matter of desensitization and impulse control under external stimuli, which requires structured training and ideally the supervision of a qualified, behaviorally therapeutic trainer. Due to an allergy, he receives special food, and his breathing should be monitored due to congenital short-sightedness caused by inbreeding. This mixed breed comes from a breed line subjected to inbreeding: for their appearance, many breed animals are deliberately bred sick. In bulldogs, the facial skull is significantly shortened. This leads to a narrowing of the upper airways and tear duct, inward-rotated eyelid margins, overbite, underbite, and crooked bite, which can severely complicate eating and breathing. The wide skull makes a natural birth difficult. When animals suffer anatomically, it is a form of inbreeding. As animal advocates, we reject this. Breeders who support such breeding are acting irresponsibly.

About Peppi

What life with Peppi looks like

Peppi is a medium-sized adult dog waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Has allergies requiring special diet, breathing issues due to brachycephalic features, needs behavioral training for impulse control and stress management around other dogs

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Peppi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Peppi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Peppi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Peppi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Peppi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Peppi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Peppi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
