Phil

Belgian Malinois · Male

Phil - a Malinois with character is looking for the right people.🐾 Phil is a typical Malinois: intelligent, eager to work and closely attached to his human. He is therefore looking for a home with experienced breeders who know what these special dogs need. Phil is absolutely not a beginner's dog! Children or other animals should not live in his new home. Once Phil has gained trust, he will bond very strongly with his person. However, this close bond is not always an advantage, because he orients himself so much to his human that he can tend to dominate him. Therefore, Phil needs a confident leadership, clear rules and people who give him security without letting him lead them. In everyday life, Phil shows a pleasant side: cyclists, joggers or loud traffic do not disturb him at all during the walk. His biggest challenge is dog encounters on the leash. Here he reacts with barking. However, if his human remains calm, gives him clear guidance and trains consistently, Phil can be handled well and reliably redirected. Phil is also very sensitive to stress. A quiet, structured home, fixed routines and meaningful physical and mental exercise are essential for him. A Malinois does not just want to be busy - he wants to work with his human. Phil is not a dog for everyone. But for the right people, he will be an incredibly loyal and impressive companion. Whoever gives him the leadership, security and task he needs, gets a dog that goes through thick and thin with his human.

About Phil

What life with Phil looks like

Phil is a adult belgian malinois dog waiting at Tierheim Gelsenkirchen in Gelsenkirchen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Phil, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Phil?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Gelsenkirchen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Phil on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Phil if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Gelsenkirchen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Phil already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Phil isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Gelsenkirchen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Phil and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
