Piuma

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 9 years

Piuma is a small female dog, sweet and delicate, a small female dog who has suffered, but who now has again trust in humans. She is now much more social, loves to greet you and bring you her favorite toy. She is ready to find a forever family. Come meet her. Piuma is a gentle small female dog, part of a litter that arrived at our animal shelter 7 years ago. She was adopted immediately, when she was only two months old, by a family that seemed suitable and that wanted and loved her very much. At that time she was called Dyana and upon arriving at her new home she was renamed Piuma. After 7 years, last year, we were contacted by the family to tell us that they no longer wanted her, without any explanation, Piuma had to return to the animal shelter. After 7 years in a family, due to personal problems that they did not want to communicate, we had her come back. It seemed the right thing to do rather than sending her to a dog shelter in her area, which they had proposed. As soon as the call came, we quickly mobilized to go pick up Piuma, as you can imagine she was terrified at first but, after months at the animal shelter, we can now say that she is a calm small female dog who has adjusted perfectly. Piuma is initially a bit wary, probably always has been. The former adopters told us that she suffers a lot from changes in situations. We are looking for a second chance for her, this time for good. Piuma is sweet and prone to have contact with a trusted human. She is a small female dog to get to know and it is essential to gain her trust. Piuma is 8 years old, spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. She is adopted near Naples after a long process of getting to know each other and after pre and post adoption placement checks.

Venite a conoscerla.

About Piuma

What life with Piuma looks like

Piuma is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Rifugio San Francesco in Italy.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇮🇹Adopting from Italy

Italian canili require adopters to sign a stewardship contract (affido) and may retain the right to verify the animal's wellbeing post-adoption. Animals are chipped and sterilized before leaving (Legge 281/91). Public canili rifugio typically waive adoption fees.

Frequently asked

Adopting Piuma, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Piuma?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rifugio San Francesco handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Piuma on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Piuma if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Rifugio San Francesco will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Piuma already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Piuma isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rifugio San Francesco early rather than rehoming privately; they know Piuma and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (IT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
