Poncho

Mixed Breed · Male

Description Our animal welfare workers report: Poncho is easy to describe, for he is simply a very, very loving fellow. His smile is almost as big as his heart, and he brings sunshine to every gloomy day. He was rescued from the danger and uncertainty of the city animal shelter because it obviously wasn't good for him there. He tested positive for leishmaniasis, although his titer was not high. Our Spanish colleagues have initiated treatment, and Poncho is doing very well now. The last leishmaniasis test was negative. His overall health is very good; he currently does not need any medication. However, his blood values should be checked every 6-12 months. In our partner shelter, the handsome male dog shows off his best side every day and enjoys life in every moment. Now he is searching for his own family and a loving home. He gets along well with other dogs and likes to play with them. On the leash and during car rides, he is also a very loving fellow and trusts people. We hope that someone will fall in love with him, just as we have fallen in love with the dear Poncho. He has many wonderful years ahead and will be a wonderful and faithful friend to his family. Information about leishmaniasis: Like most animals from abroad, Poncho will also need to adjust to life in the new home, as he is not accustomed to large crowds of people or the loud city traffic from Spain. But we are optimistic that he will adapt well. We wish for Poncho a home in a rural environment where he can enjoy nature with his people. We are looking for people who are willing to help this wonderful dog adjust to life and the new home with patience, time, and in a loving manner. Please note:

About Poncho

What life with Poncho looks like

Poncho is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierischgeholfen e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Poncho, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Poncho?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierischgeholfen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Poncho on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Poncho if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierischgeholfen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Poncho already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Poncho isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierischgeholfen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Poncho and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
