Adopt RICHIE

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

The RICHIE was found on the street in Costa da Caparica in April 2026. It was extremely thin. We quickly discovered that it had leishmaniasis and began treatment. We have no doubt that the RICHIE had a home, but it was likely abandoned when it fell ill. After four weeks of treatment with Milteforan, it looked like a different dog. It gained weight, its fur grew back and became shiny, it became happier and started wagging its tail again. At this moment, the RICHIE takes only Alopurinol daily to keep the leishmaniasis under control. People shouldn't be afraid of leishmaniasis. Dogs with leishmaniasis can live many years with a good quality of life, and we believe the RICHIE will be one of them. It still has small wounds at the tips of its ears, but they are healing and we hope the fur will grow back completely in that area. The RICHIE is extremely gentle. It would be hard to find a cuter dog! It is very affectionate with people, friendly with other dogs, and does well on a leash. It will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, neutered, and microchipped.

About RICHIE

What life with RICHIE looks like

RICHIE is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting RICHIE, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about RICHIE?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw RICHIE on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt RICHIE if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is RICHIE already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if RICHIE isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know RICHIE and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
