Riley

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Riley was born in 2018 and is a male mixed-breed dog who came to us at the animal shelter as a surrender. The reason for his relinquishment was disagreements in his previous home, particularly regarding living with children. We are therefore now looking for a new, suitable environment for Riley, where he can settle down and find a lasting home. At the animal shelter, Riley has shown himself to be an exceptionally friendly, affectionate, and open dog. He quickly bonds with people and forms a close attachment within a short time. When given security and clear, calm guidance, he strongly aligns himself with his primary caregiver and greatly enjoys closeness. It’s noticeable that he dislikes being left alone and would prefer to always be on the go with “his person”—though we currently cannot definitively assess whether this actually poses an issue with being alone. With other dogs, Riley gets along well in everyday shelter life and walks comfortably within a group. According to his previous owners, he also had no difficulties with cats—this can, of course, be individually verified upon serious interest. True to his breed type, Riley carries a certain nervousness, which can occasionally manifest audibly. He needs people who approach him calmly, patiently, and with clear structure, providing him the security he needs to orient himself well. Currently, Riley regularly participates in canicross with us, as he still carries a few extra pounds. He thoroughly enjoys the exercise and shows great motivation and enthusiasm for running—an active companion for sporty individuals who love sharing experiences together. We hope to find Riley a home with experienced dog owners who enjoy working with him, offering guidance, and meeting his physical and mental needs. A quieter setting without small children would be ideal. Anyone who gets to know Riley will gain a loyal, sensitive, and joyful dog who forms a deep bond with his person and is ready to stand by them through thick and thin.

About Riley

What life with Riley looks like

Riley is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Düren und Umgebung in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Riley, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Riley?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Düren und Umgebung handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Riley on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Riley if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Düren und Umgebung will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Riley already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Riley isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Düren und Umgebung early rather than rehoming privately; they know Riley and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
