Roland

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Roland is a small, six-year-old male dog who only recently (as of January 2025) came into the care of our friends in Linares. One day, he simply appeared on the streets of a village and was discovered by a kind lady who loved animals. Roland was allowed to live with his rescuer until she could hand him over to the loving hands of our friends. Roland is actually a really nice dog, but he seems to have very little environmental experience, which shows in his insecurities. While he enjoys the company of people and can relax when he is stroked or sleeps with physical contact, the cuddly mixed breed retreats when someone approaches, tries to leash him, or picks him up. Ultimately, he lets everything happen, but one can feel how much fear he has. His behavior towards other dogs is similarly controversial. Roland is always happy when he meets fellow animals. He barks and invites them to play, but he is then not able to actually play with his friends. He does not know the rules of communication and always stands back quickly. Roland is therefore a puppy in the body of a six-year-old dog who has gathered some, and apparently not very pleasant, experiences. But our lovable gentleman is curious and quite willing to learn new things. We are looking for Roland for patient and understanding people who are ready to show their new best friend everything he still does not know. Trust needs to be learned and strengthened just as much as targeted and well-controlled dog interactions, preferably with confident, calm companions who do not take Roland's excitement personally and show him how to play and get along. Roland needs a home where he can finally discover what it means to be a loved family member, perceived with all his strengths and weaknesses and nurtured as needed. Can you gold-plate Roland's ticket to great happiness?

DE·Show original

About Roland

What life with Roland looks like

Roland is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Roland, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Roland?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Roland on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Roland if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Roland already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Roland isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Roland and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
