Roosje

Female · Adult · 5 years

Roosje has already made a nice journey at our animal shelter and is now ready to take the step towards a new home. She is a dog with potential, but also with some important areas that require further guidance. Roosje needs time to build trust. Once she knows and trusts someone, she becomes open and shows her gentle side. She is highly food motivated, which makes her training easier, and she masters her basic commands well. Meanwhile, she has developed a strong bond with one of our regular volunteers, which beautifully shows that she can form lasting attachments. Once she knows you and trusts you, she will actively seek affection. For Roosje, we are looking for a quiet, stable environment with a patient owner who is committed to a gentle and consistent approach. During a test session with a stable male dog, we saw her fully blossom. A home with a stable, balanced male dog would be a great added value for her. Our preference is therefore for placement with a stable male dog who can offer her extra support. Roosje came into our animal shelter as a seized animal due to very poor living conditions. This past has left its mark and explains some of her sensitivities. We quickly noticed that she has difficulty with men. In the first weeks, getting used to people was an important area of work: in stressful situations, she can growl and bark. However, she has never bitten or nipped. Her behavior clearly stems from fear and uncertainty, not from aggression. Therefore, for Roosje, we are looking for an experienced owner with knowledge of the breed, who has enough time, space, and patience to continue working with her. A consistent but gentle approach is essential to show her that people are not a threat. Also, a physical and mental challenge will be necessary for her. Placement with children is not advisable for Roosje.

About Roosje

What life with Roosje looks like

Roosje is a adult dog waiting at Dierenasiel Gent in Gent.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Roosje, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Roosje?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Gent handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Roosje on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Roosje if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Gent will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Roosje already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Roosje isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Gent early rather than rehoming privately; they know Roosje and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
