Rory

Cocker Spaniel Β· Male Β· Young Β· 2 years

Rory is looking for a home that will help him build his confidence and experience all the things he may have missed out on so far. His new family will need to be patient, taking each new experience at his pace and helping him feel safe and secure as he discovers more of the world. Rory would particularly benefit from fun activities such as scent work, which would give his clever nose a wonderful outlet and provide him with mental stimulation that he hasn't previously had the opportunity to enjoy. His time being left alone will also need to be built up gradually, starting with short periods and increasing as he becomes more comfortable. Once Rory has settled in and feels at ease with his new family, he will need regular grooming to keep his coat in good condition. Rory has so much potential to blossom with the right people beside him. If you can offer him a calm, understanding home, plenty of encouragement and the time he needs to grow in confidence, you could help Rory begin a wonderful new chapter! Meet Rory, a wonderful bouncy 2-year-old boy who is ready to find a patient and understanding home where he can start discovering the world. Rory is friendly when meeting new people and does enjoy a fuss, although he can sometimes feel a little unsure, so it's important to take things slowly and let him build relationships at his own pace. He will need multiple meets here at the centre. His adopters will need to understand his needs and be confident in advocating for his space when out and about. Rory can be excitable and conflicted when meeting other dogs, as he hasn't had much opportunity to interact with them out on walks, he will need to be the only dog in the home but would benefit from walking buddies. He cannot live with cats or small furries. He can share his home with older, secondary school-aged children who understand his need for space and patience. Having had a sheltered life, Rory will need gentle introductions to new environments, allowing him plenty of time to sniff, explore and take everything in without feeling rushed. Access to a secure outdoor space would be a real bonus, giving him somewhere safe to investigate the world around him

About Rory

What life with Rory looks like

Rory is a small young adult cocker spaniel dog waiting at Dogs Trust Basildon in Wickford.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rory, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rory?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Basildon handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rory on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rory if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Dogs Trust Basildon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Rory already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rory isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Basildon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rory and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
