Dit is Roulis. Roulis had pech vanaf zijn geboorte. Hij werd geboren in een Roma-kamp en vanaf zijn eerste maand oud voelde hij alle wreedheid van de mensheid. Hij werd als speelgoed behandeld en de kinderen braken zijn achterpoten toen ze met hem voetbalden. Helaas lijden de dieren daar en het is net een soort getto-kamp; de politie kan er niet komen. Één man maakte het verschil in zijn korte leven. Hij nam hem mee in een kartonnen doos een ging naar de dichtstbijzijnde dierenkliniek om te vragen of ze hem wilde laten inslapen. De mensen in de kliniek weigerden, dus hebben ze hem geopereerd (er is nog één behandeling te gaan) en nu is hij een perfect hondje dat, ondanks alles wat hij heeft meegemaakt, van iedereen houdt. Hij verblijft sinds oktober in de kliniek en zal daar blijven tot hij zijn perfecte thuis vindt. Roulis is niet zomaar een hond – hij is een ziel die het ondenkbare heeft overleefd en nog steeds elke dag voor liefde kiest. Het is moeilijk om woorden te vinden die groot genoeg zijn om hem te beschrijven. Na alles wat het leven hem heeft aangedaan, blijft Roulis zachtaardig, lief en vol licht. Hij leeft rustig in zijn bench in de kliniek, kijkt met hoopvolle ogen naar de wereld en wacht op het moment dat iemand in de buurt komt, zodat hij met zijn zachte staart kan kwispelen en de genegenheid kan ontvangen waar hij zo van houdt. Elke pauze van het personeel is zijn favoriete moment – dan krijgt hij eindelijk zijn knuffels, kusjes en de kans om zijn pootjes te strekken. Voor een pup die zo lang aan het herstellen is, draagt hij vreugde in zijn hart als een geschenk dat hij wil delen. Hij is speels, vrolijk en wil graag behagen. Hij loopt aan de lijn, en trekt een beetje – niet uit ondeugendheid, maar uit opwinding om vrij te zijn, om de wereld weer te voelen. Roulis is dol op mensen. Echt, heel erg. Hij vindt het heerlijk om aangeraakt, geknuffeld en vastgehouden te worden. Hij speel graag met zijn bal. Roulis kan het uitstekend vinden met alle honden en blaft alleen naar katten – een speelse herinnering dat hij in hart en nieren nog steeds een puppy is. Ondanks dat hij in het verleden door kinderen gekwetst is, vertrouwt Roulis nog steeds met heel zijn hart. Hij is vooral dol op de 6-jarige dochter van de dierenarts, wat bewijst dat zijn vermogen tot vergeving veel groter is dan de pijn die hij heeft doorstaan. Roulis moet nog één kleine operatie ondergaan, hoewel je nooit zou raden dat hij al drie grote operaties aan zijn kleine pootjes heeft gehad. Zijn veerkracht is ongelooflijk.
