Rubia

Mixed Breed · Unknown

In Spain there are entire villages where almost exclusively hunters live. Dozens, sometimes hundreds of dogs lead a sad and often very short life there. With the lack of animal protection laws and the knowledge that the people who treat their animals like objects often show little respect to other people as well, it is difficult to help the poor souls in such settlements. But sometimes a dog helps itself and flees from one of the dark barns where the packs are kept on too short chains or ropes, and some even have the unbelievable luck to meet an animal welfare worker during their escape, who can then bring the four-legged creature into the care of loving hands. This happened in the case of Rubia, a beautifully attractive, one-year-old Podenco. Rubia was able to move in with her rescuer, and quickly adapted to the unfamiliar environment with the soft dog bed, regular meals, cuddles, and the feeling of security. The first days she only wanted to sleep - fear and uncertainty fell away from her, and a calm, attentive puppy emerged. Rubia is already very balanced for her age, and when she fixes someone with her green, wise eyes, you understand that the lovable, affectionate red nose has seen a lot that other dogs are spared their whole lives. But Rubia is also happy and clearly shows that the past does not interest her; she enjoys the moment and can certainly look forward to a great future. Although the Podenco is still burdened with many prejudices, more and more people are getting interested in these wonderful, sensitive, and clever bat-eared dogs. It is true that the Podenco is a sprinting hunting dog and it can take a long time before a representative of this breed can be let off the leash without worry, but this is not a problem that only affects Podencos (especially since it also depends on the character of each individual dog) and there are plenty of other ways to provide the Podenco with enough exercise. Dog sports, playing in the garden, cycling, jogging, and many other things are excellent alternatives. On the positive side of these smart Spaniards, there are many points that are far more interesting. The Podenco is usually a very quiet and balanced companion in the house. He neither barks nor excessively protects, moves almost silently, and loves cuddles above all. As a confident working dog, most learn very quickly how to stay alone without beautifying the furniture out of boredom or adding extra holes to the family shoes.

DE·Show original

About Rubia

What life with Rubia looks like

Rubia is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rubia, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rubia?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rubia on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rubia if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rubia already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rubia isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rubia and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
