Rubia

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Rubia has been in the care of an experienced foster family in Huelva since August 2022. There, the one-year-old Podenco female learned how to sleep on a couch, sit on someone's lap and explore the neighborhood on a leash. No one would have thought that Rubia could understand so quickly how to live in a house with two-legged beings, because the past of this still very young female dog has nothing to do with what she is experiencing now. Rubia lived for many months near a gas station. Perhaps as a puppy she had tried to seek help from people, but the street dogs in Spain learn quickly that only few people are really fond of them. Rubia was also cautious, quick and avoided contact with the two-legged beings wherever possible. Despite this, she had friends among the staff at the gas station, and so the pretty bat-eared dog always found food and water when it was quiet enough to look around near the pumps. Of course, the supporters were worried about the shy princess, but they never managed to get close to Rubia, touching her was unthinkable. After many months, fate had it that they finally succeeded in saving Rubia - and now a whole new life begins for the friendly young dog. In principle, it should not be difficult to find a nice home for a loving, calm and eager-to-learn being like Rubia, but her breed is burdened with so many prejudices and urban legends that the red-nosed one could face a long career in the animal shelter. Fortunately, more and more people are getting hooked on these wonderful, sensitive and clever bat-eared ones. It is true that the Podenco is a running-loving hunting dog and it can take a long time before a representative of this breed can be safely let off the leash, but this is not a problem that only affects the Podencos (especially since it also depends on the character of each individual dog) and there are plenty of other ways to give the Podenco enough exercise. Dog sports, playing in the garden, also running alongside a bicycle, jogging and much more are excellent alternatives. On the positive side of these smart Spaniards, there are many points that are far more interesting. The Podenco is usually a very calm and balanced companion in the house. He neither barks nor tends to excessive protectiveness, he moves almost silently and loves cuddles above all. As a confident working dog, most of them also learn very quickly how to be alone without beautifying the furniture of the apartment out of boredom or providing the family shoes with additional air holes.

About Rubia

What life with Rubia looks like

Rubia is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rubia, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rubia?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rubia on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rubia if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rubia already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rubia isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rubia and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
