RUBY

Female · Young · 2 years

A RUBY was found in an open field in the Alentejo when she was only 6 months old. She was very scared and it was hard to catch her as she would run away from people. She was taken to the shelter and was quickly adopted. Months later, she was returned. The RUBY has many fears... She is afraid of new places, doesn't like walking on a leash, going to the beach, or cafes. She is afraid of people. While she was at the shelter, she never showed aggression towards anyone, but at home she became very attached to her family and felt she needed to defend them, so she barked at visitors when they arrived at home or at strangers in public places. The RUBY is very attached to the shelter staff. We know that in her previous home, she was very affectionate with people, but intimidated the resident dog because she wanted all the attention for herself. At the shelter, she was always with many dogs and never showed aggression towards any of them; on the contrary, she is very submissive. The RUBY walks on a leash but there is still a lot to improve as she can pull a bit, but it's just a matter of training and patience. We believe that the RUBY can improve and transform into a perfect dog in an appropriate environment and with experienced owners.

PT·Show original

About RUBY

What life with RUBY looks like

RUBY is a large young adult dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires patient owners experienced with fearful dogs. Has fear-based behavioral issues including fear of new places, leash walking difficulties, and protective barking.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting RUBY, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about RUBY?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw RUBY on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt RUBY if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is RUBY already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if RUBY isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know RUBY and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
