Details Animal Name: Rudi Breed: Heide Terrier Mix Gender: male neutered Date of Birth: ca. 2019 Height/Weight: over 50 cm Children-friendly: yes Other Animals: only dogs Origin: own donation ID: F98/23 Description: Rudi seeks active people with heart and mind Our Heide Terrier Mix, Rudi, born ca. 2019, is a neutered male dog who came to our animal shelter on February 20, 2023, after his owner fell seriously ill. Since then, this special dog has been waiting for people who will give him a second chance. Rudi is an open, active, and people-oriented dog who loves to be in the middle of the action. He enjoys shared adventures and is an excellent companion for active people. Long walks, extended strolls, running, or running alongside inline skaters bring him great joy and help him channel his energy in a meaningful way. With his people, Rudi builds a close bond and enjoys every form of attention. His cuddly side makes him a lovable companion who seeks the closeness of his trusted people and greatly appreciates long cuddle sessions. At the animal shelter, Rudi is currently being prepared for his behavioral assessment. Together with his foster parent, he has made enormous progress and demonstrates how willing and cooperative he can be when he builds a trusting relationship with his person and is led confidently. One of his biggest challenges are bicycles and cyclists. For this reason, Rudi is classified as a potentially dangerous dog and must be led on a muzzle and leash outside his own property. The exact details of the initial classification are not known to us. Rudi, however, is working intensively on this issue and is making pleasing progress in training. With other dogs, Rudi is very social. At the animal shelter, he lives and runs with a variety of dogs and consistently demonstrates his good social skills. Therefore, an existing dog in the new home would also be a possibility. Cats and other small animals, however, should not live in the household, as they are clearly on his personal no-go list. For Rudi, we wish to find active people who enjoy continuing to work with him and fostering his positive developments. A house with a securely fenced yard would be ideal. We can also imagine a home with plenty of outdoor time and a well-protected, heated retreat area. Rudi brings many wonderful qualities: He is athletic, social, clingy, and wants to please his person. Whoever gives him the chance will have a loyal companion by his side, ready to go through life together. Additional photos and video. Posted on: 2023-03-30 06:09Last updated: 2026-05-31 04:. About Rudi

What life with Rudi looks like

Rudi is a large adult dog waiting at Tierschutz Hildesheim und Umgebung e.V. in Hildesheim.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rudi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rudi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Hildesheim und Umgebung e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rudi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rudi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Hildesheim und Umgebung e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rudi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rudi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Hildesheim und Umgebung e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rudi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
