Rufus

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

Rufus, born in 2020 and estimated to be about 55 cm tall, is a handsome, friendly male dog with shaggy fur that you just want to touch. He is not one of those dogs who throws their arms around the first visitor. Rufus is reserved: he watches first and then carefully decides whether he wants to approach. In Izvoru he has already made nice progress – small but significant steps that show how much is in him. There, Rufus lives in a private boarding facility, where he was lovingly prepared for his departure. There he has taken a big leap forward. We are incredibly proud of our shaggy-nosed boy! Rufus shows that he can build trust when given time. He wants to belong, but at his own pace. His reserve is not a weakness – it is the result of a life that until now has held little good. All the more beautiful to see how he is blossoming. Visit update February 2026: Rufus greeted the visit with a wagging tail and was very happy about the tasty treats. A great dog – without any food envy, friendly and interested in people. We were very pleased with his huge developmental steps. This shows us that the decision to place him in the private boarding facility was absolutely right. Now he just needs to find his family. Rufus is presumably a Livestock Guardian Dog mix – which means he needs a home that suits his nature. A rural setting, calm, clear structure and ideally a garden of his own, where he can feel safe and keep watch. LGD mixes therefore need experienced, confident people who lead consistently but lovingly. So that Rufus does not have to wait any longer for his journey to happiness, we urgently seek an experienced and loving foster placement or such a home! Perhaps this is exactly the moment when someone discovers his heart. Rufus is neutered and will be vaccinated, microchipped, and placed with a protection contract after a positive preliminary check. General note about our dogs: Our dogs in Romania are visited regularly so that we can repeatedly reassess their behavior and development. These personal impressions help us greatly in conveying as accurate a picture as possible of each individual dog. However, we would like to point out that a dog can show a different side in a new environment – with new people, new routines, and new impressions. This is completely normal and part of every process of change. Many dogs even open up faster in a home and show sides that were not visible at the shelter at all. Our assessments are therefore based on current observations but are not a guarantee of every behavior in the new environment. They are meant to give orientation and show how the dog presents itself at the shelter – and what potential lies within. We are convinced that with patience, understanding, and a loving environment, every dog can find its way and continue to develop positively.

About Rufus

What life with Rufus looks like

Rufus is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rufus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rufus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rufus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rufus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Rufus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rufus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rufus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
