SABI

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 6 years

A SABI was adopted from a municipal dog shelter when she was still a puppy, along with a male dog, Lobo. She had a home for some time, until the owners moved and simply left the dogs behind. The property owner, at first, did not object, believing the owners would return to retrieve them. Thus, the dogs remained there for many months, confined to a dog shelter. Someone would leave them food, but they had very little human contact. Later, the property owner eventually turned the dogs over to the municipal dog shelter, and in December 2022, they came to our shelter. No one ever showed interest in adopting them, and unfortunately, Lobo passed away in December 2025. The SABI was left alone. She had already arrived at the shelter feeling sad and became even more so after losing her life companion. The SABI is a sweet and gentle female dog, but very timid. She is afraid of strangers, not out of aggression, but out of fear. With the people she knows, she wants to trust, wags her tail, and jumps with joy. She just needs time and patience. Unfortunately, something that many adopters do not have, as they expect “perfect” dogs from the first day and fully adapted ones in just a few days. The SABI would flourish in a home, as long as she was given the necessary time to adapt. Even when scared, the SABI is always very gentle. She never reacts badly, never growls, nor bites. She gets along well with other dogs. The death of Lobo left her very sad, but she has made new friends in the shelter in the meantime. Ideally, the home to which she goes should already have another dog, so she is not alone. We believe there is somewhere a special person, with the right heart and patience, waiting for the SABI. The SABI will be delivered vaccinated, dewormed, spayed, and with a microchip. Note: this animal has a bite history.

PT·Show original

A Sabi ficou sozinha.

About SABI

What life with SABI looks like

SABI is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires patient owner due to shyness and fear of strangers. Would benefit from having another dog companion.

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting SABI, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about SABI?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw SABI on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt SABI if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is SABI already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if SABI isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know SABI and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
