Adopt Sam

Male · Senior · 12 years

Background: This lovely dog is Sam. Sam is a male Mechelse shepherd, born in September 2014. A real sweetheart! He came to us, together with his girlfriend Emmy, because there was no more time for them. They spent long days alone and this is certainly not good for them. We are also happy that we may look for a new place for them! In the ideal world they would stay together but we certainly won't limit them. If there is separate interest, we will certainly give it a chance! Character: Sam is still an energetic young dog. He is alert, but when you say hello nicely, he is immediately your friend. He walks well on a leash and really loves this exercise! A home where he gets a nice walk every day is definitely a must! He ignores most dogs but sometimes he can still react briefly. Although he can be strong, he is also easy to handle with positive guidance! Sam is a somewhat nervous dog. But this has naturally developed from the past. We think that if he gets daily structure, attention and exercise, this will subside. In a home environment, he is also a bit awkward and nervous. Being left alone must therefore be built up! Placement: We are looking for a home for Sam where he doesn't have to be alone too much. That has been the case for too long, and he deserves better! This home can definitely be shared with a female dog. Due to his gentle character, he can also go to a family with children. Older children who are used to large dogs and also show the necessary respect for them. A securely fenced garden is definitely a plus! Here he can enjoy nice play moments.

AchtergrondDeze lieve man is Sam.

About Sam

What life with Sam looks like

Sam is a senior dog waiting at Dierenasiel Sint-Truiden in Sint-Truiden.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sam, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sam?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Sint-Truiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sam on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sam if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Sint-Truiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sam already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sam isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Sint-Truiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sam and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
