Saratoga

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 6 years

Update November 10, 2024 Saratoga; she is a friendly and affectionate dog who lets herself be handled without any problem (grooming, checking teeth, trimming nails, putting on a collar, harness, treating, and checking wounds), but she needs to reduce her stress levels so that her true personality can shine through. Saratoga is very unhappy in the kennel enclosure. Being confined and alone for such long periods generates a lot of anxiety for her, and we have observed that at home, at least in the beginning, she does not handle solitude well and needs to be accompanied. She is sociable with people and large dogs, but we need to work on certain associations she has with small animals. We do not know how much of this is due to her anxiety and how much is a lack of socialization, so she needs an adopter with experience who can dedicate a lot of time to working with her and ensure she is not left alone during the first weeks (or months). To be honest, a home in the suburbs where she can work on her stress levels away from the hyperstimulation of the city would be very beneficial. For cohabitation and for now, we consider her unsuitable for living with small animals or children in the home. She will need a long period of adaptation but is a dog with a lot of potential to be your best nap companion if you put in the effort.--------------- Saratoga is Patton's adventure companion; together they were found by the police wandering one night in the streets of a nearby town to the animal shelter. As they are large, they scared people, and we went to get them in the middle of the night. She did not have a microchip, but we know she was from the same owner the police identified, so we waited for Patton's case to be resolved before spreading the word. She is a beautiful and sociable dog. She is already spayed. Her Leishmania analysis is negative, and according to general analyses, there is no suspicion of Ehrlichia. *January 2024: She is affectionate and walks well. She gets along well with large dogs, but small ones make her nervous. November 2024: Her Leishmania analysis has come back positive.

About Saratoga

What life with Saratoga looks like

Saratoga is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ALBA Protectora Madrid in Madrid.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Saratoga, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Saratoga?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ALBA Protectora Madrid handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Saratoga on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Saratoga if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ALBA Protectora Madrid will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Saratoga already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Saratoga isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ALBA Protectora Madrid early rather than rehoming privately; they know Saratoga and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
