Schmidtke

American Staffordshire Terrier · Male · Senior · 9 years

Our Schmidtke was seized due to his breed - and now we can look for a new home for him outside of Hamburg after he passed the behavioral assessment. He is an old-school senior: kind, polite, respectful and accordingly expects to be valued and treated well. Schmidtke also comes with a decent amount of stubbornness and if something does not suit him, he will say so. This includes strangers who he perceives as threatening. What people may intend as friendly, is unfortunately quickly threatening for Schmidke: direct eye contact, leaning forward, "saying hello". The old gentleman does not hesitate and wants to defend himself. Therefore, when meeting strangers, the muzzle should be used and attention should be paid to his body language to prevent any tense situations from arising. Once Schmidke has gotten to know someone properly, he is a cheerful, funny guy. However, if something is not fast enough for him, like feeding or getting ready for a walk, he can be grumpy towards his trusted people. Therefore, he needs people who have a good combination of humor, who do not take everything too seriously - and at the same time are consistent, in order to convey to the old gentleman that not everything happens "Pronto", immediately. Due to his age, Schmidtke has a lens clouding and dry eyes. He needs daily eye drops, which he now applies without problems on his own. He also has occasional back aches. In this case, he benefits greatly from massages and warmth during wet and cold weather. Schmidtke is a quiet companion indoors, who enjoys curling up in the dog bed and sleeping. However, outside, he can really turn up the volume and keeps our walking companions on their toes. Are you interested in giving our seasoned gentleman another home in his best years?

DE·Show original

About Schmidtke

What life with Schmidtke looks like

Schmidtke is a medium-sized senior american staffordshire terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Eye condition requiring daily eye ointment, occasional back pain needing massage and warmth, requires muzzle with strangers, cannot be adopted in Hamburg

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Schmidtke, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Schmidtke?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Schmidtke on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Schmidtke if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Schmidtke already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Schmidtke isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Schmidtke and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
