Adopt Sekhu

Male · Young · 3 years

His start in life was unfortunately not easy: as a pup, he was abused and spent a lot of time alone with a muzzle. Building trust in people was a big challenge for Sekhu. But with time, patience, and the right approach, he has made great progress. Today, he is ready for a new chapter in a warm home. Sekhu is a sensitive dog who can be a bit nervous and unsure at first. In the past, he would react with bites during corrections, but he has not shown this behavior for a long time. He is gradually opening up each day into a gentle, loving dog who loves cuddles and enjoys long sniffing walks. Sekhu finds other dogs a bit exciting, but with a calm and positive introduction, this can certainly be developed and tested further. With older children (from 14 years old), he can be a nice and reliable companion. Sekhu is a dog with a lot of potential who is extremely grateful for the chance he has been given. With a patient and loving owner, he will grow into a loyal and warm friend. Are you the one who wants to give Sekhu a safe and loving home? Then fill out the adoption form via our website: www.dierenbeschermingmechelen.

About Sekhu

What life with Sekhu looks like

Sekhu is a large young adult dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sekhu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sekhu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sekhu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sekhu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sekhu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sekhu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sekhu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
