Sherlock

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 10 years

male Jagdhund-Mix born on 01/2016 surrendered neutered [x] yes / [] no Since in animal shelter since 02.08.2023 ________________________ Sherlock came to us in the animal shelter via the local authority and was subsequently rehomed. He became wesenstestpflichtig due to multiple biting incidents. The handsome hunting dog is loyal, loves his human very much, and shows great self-confidence, which only masks deep-seated insecurity or a lack of trust in humans and their ability to resolve situations. He has developed the habit of making decisions and resolving confrontations or perceived "conflicts" on his own, for example, only when strangers make eye contact with him. With his trusted people, Sherlock is very friendly and clingy, willing to please and give up control when things are going well, but with strangers or when he perceives insecurity, he sees the threat directly and feels responsible to clarify the situation – true to the motto: "The best defense is a good offense!" Sherlock manages his space independently and does so with assertiveness towards strangers. Even during vet check-ups, Sherlock needs time and practice to maintain his composure and not "explode" because he perceives a loss of control. At these points, training is approached with patience and calm, and must be consistently worked on in a new home. Sherlock should and must learn to allow his human to take the lead in decisions and to give up control over situations – and not be left behind. We are therefore looking for people who enjoy training, are sovereign and naturally calm, and are patient with him. We are sure that Sherlock would be happy to simply relax and rely on his human. He is willing to work, can be motivated well, and shows great attentiveness. For people who like to play scent games or nose work with their dog, he would be very well suited. In public spaces, Sherlock generally does great, street traffic, bus rides, encounters with other dogs, city center, etc., do not bother him. Sherlock gets along exceptionally well with female dogs and could very much like to be rehomed into a suitable companion. Sherlock will not be rehomed into an environment with children. Due to biting incidents in the past where Sherlock stood between his owner and diffuse perceived "danger," such as during distress, he is classified as wesenstestpflichtig. Currently, he is being prepared for the corresponding wesenstest examination in the animal shelter, but still has a long way to go. He must pass the examination by ________________________ (as of 08.03.2025) (click on the images to see them in full size!) männlich Jagdhund-Mix wesenstestpflichtig Geboren 01/2016 Abgabetier Kastriert ja / [] nein Im Tierheim seit 02.08.2023 ________________________ Sherlock kam über das Ordnungsamt zu uns ins Tierheim und wurde anschließend übereignet. About Sherlock

What life with Sherlock looks like

Sherlock is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Marburg in Marburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sherlock, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sherlock?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Marburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sherlock on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sherlock if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Marburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sherlock already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sherlock isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Marburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sherlock and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
