Πριν διασταυρωθεί ο δρόμος του Σήφη με εκείνον της εθελόντριάς μας, όλα έδειχναν πως οι πιθανότητες να επιβιώσει ήταν ανύπαρκτες. Εγκαταλελειμμένος σε ένα εργοτάξιο, ξαπλωμένος στο χώμα, έτρεμε. Πετσί και κόκαλο, με ελάχιστο τρίχωμα. Έμοιαζε περισσότερο με μια σκιά, παρά με σκύλο. Οι εργάτες είπαν πως ήταν έτσι για πάνω από μήνα, χωρίς κανείς να τον βοηθήσει. Ο Σήφης μεταφέρθηκε άμεσα στον κτηνίατρο και μετά στο καταφύγιο. Αν και βαριά άρρωστος (θετικός στη Λεϊσμανίωση, Ερλίχια, Ανάπλασμα και Μπαμπέσια) οι αιματολογικές τιμές ήταν ενθαρρυντικές… και στα μάτια του υπήρχε ακόμη εκείνη η σπίθα. Η πρωταρχική θέληση μιας ύπαρξης να ζήσει. Μέσα σε λίγες μόνο εβδομάδες, κάτω από τις φτερούγες της φροντίδας και της αγάπης, ο Σήφης άρχισε να μεταμορφώνεται. Το τρίχωμά του επανήλθε, το σώμα του δυνάμωσε, η ψυχή του φώτισε. Τρώει σαν πρωταθλητής (δύο κουβάδες φαγητό, αν του αφήσεις), λατρεύει τις εξερευνήσεις και διψά για ανθρώπινη παρουσία. Αγκαλιές, φιλιά, λόγια γλυκά: εκεί είναι που λάμπει! Είναι απ’ αυτά τα σκυλάκια που κουρνιάζουν επάνω σου και αναστενάζουν με ανακούφιση. Ο Σήφης έχει ολοκληρώσει τη θεραπεία του και λαμβάνει καθημερινά μονάχα ένα χάπι για τη Λεϊσμανίαση. Είναι στειρωμένος, δραστήριος, γεμάτος ζωή, έτοιμος να βρει το παντοτινό του σπίτι. Αλλά η ζωή στο καταφύγιο είναι δύσκολη για τόσο ευαίσθητες ψυχές, σαν τη δική του. Κάποια από τα άλλα σκυλιά δεν τον αντιμετωπίζουν με καλοσύνη… και πια αποφεύγει να βγαίνει απ’ το κλουβί του. Στέκεται ήσυχος… απλώς ελπίζοντας να τον προσέξει κάποιος. Ο Σήφης δεν είναι πια μια σκιά. Δεν είναι μια ¨χαμένη υπόθεση¨. Είναι ένας επιζών. Ένα τρυφερό, καλόκαρδο αγόρι που συνεχίζει να πιστεύει στους ανθρώπους. Και το να του δώσετε ένα σπίτι… θα είναι ένα δώρο που θα σας το ανταποδώσει εκατονταπλάσια.
