Adopt Simba

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Simba is a friendly, just under two years old herding dog mix male, who is currently occupied with tires. He is not yet an adult, but also no longer a puppy; this can be quite demanding for a young male dog. That's why he receives guidance and support, structure and kindness at the animal shelter; exactly what teenagers "in transition" need. Simba also needs people by his side in his new home, who will stay with him through the last remnants of adolescence until the late bloomer is fully matured in three or four years. Although Simba can sometimes be more energetic, he has a good grip on humans, although his leash training is occasionally lacking, as it was completely unfamiliar to him when he came to the animal shelter. Simba is quite sensitive, but has a good basic trust. He bonds quickly with his trusted people and enjoys time with them, but shows neither controlling nor possessive behavior. He can be alone for hours and behaves quietly in the house, is house-trained and loves long walks. Simba gets along well with other animals and can be rehomed as a second dog, depending on the individual case. Sometimes he is a bit pushy, but knows how to de-escalate himself around older dogs when necessary. So far he has not really wanted to compete with other dogs, but he still has some time to grow up, during which this can change quickly. From his previous owners he was bought as an Akbash, phenotypically he seems to be at most a mix of that, other "components" are unknown. He is 80 cm at the shoulder and weighs 55 kg at the moment, but should still gain weight. However, his development currently requires a lot of calories and he is building muscle, but the staff at the animal shelter are already trying to feed him a few grams of fat onto his ribs. Simba is discovering his HSH genes and is appropriately and pleasantly alert; near his primary caregiver he prefers to rely on her and sees no reason to attack at the moment. A home with a house and garden, preferably in a rural area, would be ideal for him. His future owners should have experience with dogs, but also the necessary openness towards the individuality of a character. They should have a sense of humor, love large dogs, be kind and clear in their leadership, and enjoy accompanying and supporting a young male dog as he grows up. Simba is a treasure, who brings a lot of potential that had not been used before. His new people will get a treasure of a dog and if they have cats, that is no problem at all, because he grew up with them and is always happy to see them at the animal shelter.

About Simba

What life with Simba looks like

Simba is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at BMT Tierheim Elisabethenhof in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Simba, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Simba?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. BMT Tierheim Elisabethenhof handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Simba on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Simba if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — BMT Tierheim Elisabethenhof will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Simba already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Simba isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with BMT Tierheim Elisabethenhof early rather than rehoming privately; they know Simba and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
