Adopt Sky

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

Sky came to us as a drop-off dog at just one year old and is searching for a very special home as a herding dog. He forms an intense bond with his trusted people, but they must first prove themselves: Clear, respectful leadership is crucial to building a good foundation with him. Sky is under a lot of stress at the animal shelter, and he is currently going through puberty, which means he is testing and sometimes exceeding boundaries. Sky is easily excitable and not patient, and he also shows strong resource, food, and status aggression, which can present challenges to his people. He behaves distantly and aggressively with people, so real leaders are needed who can show him clear boundaries without wavering. Fortunately, Sky has a good basic obedience and behaves diligently and is motivated to work when on a leash with the right people. He is leash-friendly and generally relaxed on walks. Sky scans his environment closely and always barks to alert any changes. He is a vigilant dog, nothing escapes his notice. In some everyday situations, however, he can be insecure and thus needs a secure person by his side even more. With other dogs, Sky is generally compatible by sympathy, he could also live with a confident female dog in the household (after spaying). Sky is accustomed to wearing a muzzle and wears it during walks, at the vet, and in training situations. As a herding dog, Sky is looking for people who have experience with such breeds and can provide him with a calm environment. Sky cannot live in a household with children or small animals. Interested parties for Sky please send an email with details on how Sky would live with you and what experience you have with (herding) dogs. We work with a trainer who specializes in herding dogs, and we are happy to make contact with interested parties about our herding dogs. Walks well on a leash.

About Sky

What life with Sky looks like

Sky is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken in Saarbrücken.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Bertha-Bruch-Tierheim Saarbrücken early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
