Smilla & Hermine

Female · Young · 1 year

Smilla and Hermine were born in September 2025 (estimated) from a wild stray cat and have lived on the streets for their first months. They came into our care in March/April where they received medical attention, vaccinations, and were spayed/neutered. Like all strays, both sisters still need to learn to trust humans. Smilla has made great progress: she is open and curious and moves freely through the room when a person present with whom she already has trust. She then also likes to actively approach, to play or get treats. She has already begun purring and snuggling up. With further patience and training, she will soon enjoy petting. Hermine, her taller sister, is very freedom-loving and can hardly wait to move into a new home where she has plenty of space and after the adjustment period can go outside again. So far, she has been reserved towards people but also ventures close for treats. Currently, she does not let herself be touched yet. The two have already adapted well to life in the house: they love scratching posts, like sitting by the window and sleep on raised resting places. Hermine needs caves and hiding places where she can retreat in peace. Both maunchy ladies are looking for a home with calm people who ideally have experience with shy cats and approach them gently and patiently. There should be no children living in the household, as unforeseen movements could unsettle the little ones. Whether the two former stray kittens will still develop into cuddly tigers is not foreseeable at this point. Whoever gives them a new home must be aware of and agree with that.

About Smilla & Hermine

What life with Smilla & Hermine looks like

Smilla & Hermine is a large young adult cat waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Smilla & Hermine, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Smilla & Hermine?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Smilla & Hermine on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Smilla & Hermine if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Smilla & Hermine already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Smilla & Hermine isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Smilla & Hermine and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
