Smołek

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

Smołek is a dog born in 2020 who came to our animal shelter in a state of extreme fear and withdrawal. His behavior from the first days indicated that he may have experienced difficult situations in the past, which left a clear mark on his psyche. Initially, he avoided contact with people, reacting with fear to attempts to approach, and every new situation was a source of strong stress for him. Currently, Smołek is gradually making progress, and although he is still not a dog fully trusting people, there are already first signs of opening up to contact. In a calm, predictable environment, he begins to feel somewhat more confident, but he still requires time, patience, and work based on building relationships and a sense of security. When his comfort level increases, he sometimes barks at people - this is rather an expression of uncertainty than aggression. Smołek is not yet able to walk on a leash, so the future caregiver should be prepared to start working on this from scratch, preferably with the support of a behaviorist or someone experienced with fearful dogs. New stimuli and changes in the environment are still difficult for him, so he will do best in a quiet home without excessive stressful situations. The dog weighs about 12 kg and is moderately active. Most days, he rests in his crate, choosing calm ways to spend his time. He does not show destructive behaviors - he doesn't damage the kennel run or the yard, nor does he dig. He has a good appetite, which can be helpful in working on his socialization and building positive associations. In relations with other dogs, Smołek shows a positive attitude, which may be a big asset, especially in a home where there is already a balanced, calm dog. The presence of such a companion can help him gain confidence more quickly. The attitude towards cats is currently unknown. Smołek is looking for a responsible, patient caregiver who understands his needs and is ready to spend time building a relationship with him. This is a dog for a calm, consistent, and sensitive person who will appreciate even the smallest progress. Under appropriate conditions, he has a chance to become a loyal and devoted companion, but his path to full trust will require time and commitment. If you are looking for a dog you can give a chance for a new, better life and you are ready to work with him at his pace - Smołek may be just that special companion. Smołek is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped.

PL·Show original

About Smołek

What life with Smołek looks like

Smołek is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) in Poland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Smołek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Smołek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Smołek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Smołek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Smołek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Smołek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Smołek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
