Thank you so much!Ask moreThe poor grandpaHi, I am SocratesMy sponsor is Natalia Archontaki&I was found on the streets with a very tight collar around my neck. That horrible thing had actually cut through my skin and caused a wound around my neck. Fortunately I was found by some nice people who brought me to the shelter. I have been treated by the vet, and now the wound is completely healed, and hair is already growing back on where the wound was. Unfortunately I have leishmaniasis so I need daily medication to keep that under control. And I am still a bit skinny from living on the streets but slowly I am gaining the weight back. I am fine with other dogs, as long as they are not too pushy and challenge me too much. I am an older gentleman so I expect the young ones to know their place. Cats are okay with me too.I would be so grateful to leave the streets and the shelter life behind. I hope after all I have been through, I would deserve a warm bed and a loving family. About Socrates

What life with Socrates looks like

Socrates is a medium-sized puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Gouves Shelter in Heraklion.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

Note from the shelter: Leishmaniasis requiring daily medication

🇬🇷Adopting from Greece

Greek shelters often partner with Northern European rescue groups for placements. Animals are sterilized, vaccinated, and chipped before adoption. Fees vary widely depending on whether the shelter is municipal or NGO-run.

Frequently asked

Adopting Socrates, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Socrates?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Gouves Shelter handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Socrates on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Socrates if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Gouves Shelter will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Socrates already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Socrates isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Gouves Shelter early rather than rehoming privately; they know Socrates and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
