Sparrow

Mixed Breed · Male

Sparrow is one of those dogs where even hardened animal welfare workers get teary-eyed, whose lives hang by a thread at the start, who demand all hope and strength – and who give us all the certainty that the work being done in Spain is irreplaceable. Sparrow came into the care of our friends in Sevilla four months ago. Although it's not uncommon for dogs to arrive in a terrible state at the animal shelter, it's always a horror to have to accompany such a helpless being into a fight with an uncertain end. Sparrow was covered in parasites, and it was likely that he had lain by the side of a road for a long time, because his hind legs were partially paralyzed, and standing and walking were barely possible. One eye was so severely injured that the veterinarians had to remove it due to the advancing infection. Operating on an animal in such a pitiful general condition is always a challenge – and many do not wake up. But Sparrow is an incredible fighter, and anyone who meets our charming cow-spotter at the animal shelter Arca Sevilla in Arca would never guess the pirate's story. Sparrow has transformed into a real sunbeam after his recovery. The six-year-old (as of July 2023) male dog enjoys his life and the pain-free existence, he is always in the company of his two- and four-legged friends, and he is a role model of even-temperedness and friendliness. Sparrow has relearned how to walk, run, jump, and climb up the trousers of animal welfare workers to check the pockets for any possible cookies. He gets along with dogs of any size and gets along well with children – what more could one want from a great family dog? Sparrow will probably never win a beauty contest, but that's only because the judges only evaluate the outer appearance; our little tramp would be a multiple champion! If you haven't overlooked our hero by now and are convinced that Sparrow should become your new best friend, then just get in touch with us uncommitted, and we'll gladly tell you what needs to happen so that our captain can soon enter your home and heart!

DE·Show original

About Sparrow

What life with Sparrow looks like

Sparrow is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sparrow, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sparrow?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sparrow on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sparrow if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sparrow already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sparrow isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sparrow and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
