Speedy Gonzales

European Shorthair · Male · Young · 3 years

Speedy came to us severely injured as a young kitten, at around 6 months old, and had no human contact prior to that. The little guy belongs to the many feral-born cats in the Pinneberg district. Due to this, he is still very shy, insecure, and fearful of people to this day. The caretakers he has known for longer and who he trusts can still sometimes gently stroke his back, but that is currently the height of his comfort. He needs a long time to build trust and will most likely never become a lap cat, and maybe never fully tame. But he would already be happy if he found a quiet home somewhere (his first in his life, as he has only known an animal shelter until now) where he can finally rest, a home where he is not harassed and where people are happy to have his company and expect nothing else from him. During his recovery phase in the early months of his stay at the shelter, he got to know Yuki, who is also only partially socialized, and since then, the two have been inseparable. Now, the two are desperately seeking a quiet home with loving people who have a lot of understanding for two small, anxious kittens. Since Speedy and Yuki had (a painful dental condition) Forl, both of them had all their teeth surgically removed. They can still eat without any problems and are now finally pain-free. Children should not be in the new home. Fellow animals, however, would not be a problem, as they are super socialized within their own species. Speedy and Yuki can only be rehomed together. Speedy and Yuki will only be rehomed as apartment cats. A secured balcony or an outdoor area accessible from the house that is fully secured is required. Due to our current personnel situation, it may unfortunately take longer than we would like to respond to inquiries. We apologize for the inconvenience!

About Speedy Gonzales

What life with Speedy Gonzales looks like

Speedy Gonzales is a large young adult european shorthair cat waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Speedy Gonzales, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Speedy Gonzales?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Speedy Gonzales on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Speedy Gonzales if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Speedy Gonzales already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Speedy Gonzales isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Speedy Gonzales and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
