Adopt Spike

Male

Breed: Pinscher-Mix - male dog shoulder height: ca. 27cm neutered: no, (has active hormone chip) Spike was rehomed in October and unfortunately lost his home again. This little guy is very clingy and people-oriented and tends to defend his primary caregiver as well as his resources. We assume that in his previous life, he didn't learn much and especially didn't establish any boundaries. Therefore, Spike needs authoritative people who can make it clear to him that he is not the boss in the house and who can read his body language. Spike is incredibly cuddly and loves his/her people very much. Leash manners and being alone need to be consistently practiced with him. Under the supervision of our president and dog trainer, he showed himself to be very receptive and we believe that with the right guidance, he will become a great and loyal companion. Unfortunately, epilepsy was diagnosed in him, but it is now well-controlled with the appropriate medication. A pre-existing neutered female dog would be possible if there is mutual affection, but he is also happy to be a single dog. Small children should not live in the new home. display: none !important; .lSSlideOuter .lSPager.lSGallery { jQuery(document).ready(function() { // Ensure lightGallery is available on jQuery if (typeof lightGallery !== 'undefined' && !jQuery.fn.lightGallery) { jQuery.fn.lightGallery = lightGallery; var setting_download = ''; jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052').lightSlider({ slideEndAnimation: true, onSliderLoad: function(el) { jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052').removeClass('cS-hidden'); jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052').addClass('gwts-loaded'); var lithbox = jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052').attr("data-litebx"); var galleryElement = jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052'); var galleryItems = galleryElement.find('.lslide'); if(galleryElement.length > 0 && galleryItems.length > 0 && typeof jQuery.fn.lightGallery !== 'undefined'){ galleryElement.lightGallery({ download: setting_download, selector:

Kleinkinder sollten nicht im neuen Zuhause leben. display: none !important; .lSSlideOuter .lSPager.lSGallery { jQuery(document).ready(function() { // Ensure lightGallery is available on jQuery if (typeof lightGallery !== 'undefined' && !jQuery.fn.lightGallery) { jQuery.fn.lightGallery = lightGallery; var setting_download = ''; jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052').lightSlider({ slideEndAnimation: true, onSliderLoad: function(el) { jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052').removeClass('cS-hidden'); jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052').addClass('gwts-loaded'); var lithbox = jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052').attr("data-litebx"); var galleryElement = jQuery('-gwl-img-gallery5052'); var galleryItems = galleryElement.find('.lslide'); if(galleryElement.length > 0 && galleryItems.length > 0 && typeof jQuery.fn.lightGallery !== 'undefined'){ galleryElement.lightGallery({ download: setting_download, selector: '-gwl-img-gallery5052 li'

About Spike

What life with Spike looks like

Spike is a small adult dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Porz in Köln.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spike, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spike?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Porz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spike on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spike if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Porz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spike already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spike isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Porz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spike and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
