Szakal

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

A pearl came to our animal shelter. Well, maybe not quite polished yet, but the potential is enormous. Szakal—that’s who we’re talking about—arrived with us at the end of March as a stray. I have no idea how he ended up as a stray, but maybe that’s for the best? Now, he finally has a chance to find a new, better home. Szakal is most likely a mix of German Shepherd and Husky. If you were charmed by his looks, let go, because our little rascal has a great personality. His main hobby is running—where? You can ask—anywhere, as long as he’s in front, it doesn’t matter how long the leash is; you can be sure that Szakal will be at the end of it. Honestly, you can’t tire this guy out; seriously, I’ve tried. He could find his place in canicross or bikejoring. The husky is also a very independent dog. On walks, he doesn’t need a human at all, but when he’s “forced” to stop and initiates contact, he remembers that he’s with someone on a walk. But! Meeting humans brings him a lot of joy, he loves playing with his handler, he’s still not quite mastering the whole toy racket, and he also likes to butt into the rear end. This issue is definitely something to work on, but don’t dig too deep. You can take Szakala anywhere—he feels good everywhere, but he’s happiest in the water. Whether it’s a puddle, a stream, or a lake, the boy will dive into everything. In the city, he feels like a fish in water, though he sometimes gets drawn to people or dogs. Cars, trucks, and bicycles totally don’t interest him. He can get along with other dogs, but due to his young age, he often tests boundaries and can be a bit pushy in contact, fortunately, he reads other dogs’ signals well and quickly lets up. Who are we looking for for Szakala? Actively engaged, experienced in life and working with a dog, those who want more from a four-legged friend than just a quick walk around the block. Szakal has a really great potential to be a brilliant dog, it just needs to be brought out. Szakal is about 1.5 years old, a medium-sized dog, weighing around 21kg. He’s been vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. He can live anywhere, with proper introduction, he won’t have a problem with other dogs, but I’m not sure about his relationship with cats. If his doggy personality doesn’t deter you, call volunteer Frank at 572 440 330. If you want to help this dog but can’t adopt him, we invite you to go for walks! From Tuesday to Sunday, in the hours .

Szakal to najprawdopodobniej mix owczarka niemieckiego i husky. Samochody, tiry i rowery totalnie go nie interesują. Został zaszczepiony, wykastrowany i zaczipowany. About Szakal

What life with Szakal looks like

Szakal is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Choszczno in Poland.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Szakal, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Szakal?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Choszczno handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Szakal on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Szakal if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Choszczno will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Szakal already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Szakal isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Choszczno early rather than rehoming privately; they know Szakal and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
