Taco

Male · Adult · 4 years

This is our Taco, an Agapornis Roseicollis male, born November 2020. Tacootje was given up to us due to lack of time. Because Taco received less attention, he began to get bored, which manifested in more screaming. He also didn't click well with the other Agapornis in the house, so the owner had to make the difficult decision to give Taco up to us. At his previous owners, Taco was allowed to fly around regularly and would come sit with people. But he is not a hand-tame bird, so he won't step onto your hand. We are now looking for a cozy new home for Taco where he can enjoy enough freedom (so not locked up in a cage all day), enough challenges like demolition toys, and a nice Agapornis lady to fall in love with. Taco is waiting impatiently!

NL·Show original

About Taco

What life with Taco looks like

Taco is a adult bird waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Taco, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Taco?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Taco on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Taco if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Taco already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Taco isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Taco and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
