Taco

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Taco was rehomed with us over six years ago and has now returned to us because his beloved owners are seriously ill. At first, he suffered greatly from the separation and cried all day. Slowly, he seems to be adapting; we hope, however, that he will soon turn his back on the animal shelter. Taco is fit, very cuddly, walks well on a leash, and is generally well-tempered with other dogs. In his home, he was a prince and was very spoiled. Of course, this shows how much his owners loved him, but unfortunately, it also highlights that Taco was forced into a role that he couldn't really handle, namely: being responsible for everything. Ultimately, Taco took on the roles of doorkeeper, Frauchenprotector, cat-dispatcher, and bodyguard. So much work is exhausting and not really manageable for a dog like Taco, who would much rather take a break and not worry about anything. In fact, not much is needed to take the responsibility off his shoulders, and he gladly accepts it. Still, he has been living like this for a long time, so not every sense of obligation will disappear overnight. For example, visit situations or moments when strangers get too close should be regulated for him, because if Taco handles everything alone, he has been a bit unfriendly in the past. Therefore, he wears a muzzle, which he accepts without complaint, as his former owners used it as well. Taco is a fine fellow. Ambitious beginners without children would be suitable if there is still a desire to work with him a little and get some help. We are of course standing by with advice and support. In his old home, Taco could be left alone for hours and was house-trained. He can ride in the car, but it is not his favorite hobby. We rehomed him as a leishmaniasis-positive dog. His values are so good that he currently only needs to take 30 days of tablets once a year, which cost around 20 euros. Regular blood tests (every 6-12 months and as needed) are still necessary to keep an eye on his values. This should not deter you; we would be happy to advise you in detail about this. The sweet Taco, who by the way is recently shorn and more lank, wants to get out of the animal shelter quickly.

DE·Show original

About Taco

What life with Taco looks like

Taco is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Taco, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Taco?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Taco on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Taco if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Taco already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Taco isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Taco and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
